St. Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Academy Bulletin

Mr. Heide Principal

Welcome to the start of 2018-2019 school year! We hope this bulletin finds you well rested and ready to begin our work together. Our bulletin is designed to keep you in the loop and up to date on all that is going on at St. Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Academy. This will not only allow you to examine all that is occurring in your child’s classroom, but to get excited about future grades and activities at St. Mary Gate of Heaven. If you ever misplace your copy, the bulletin will also be posted on our school website, www.smgh.org. This Saturday evening at 7:30 P.M., we will celebrate Our Blessed Mother’s birthday. The celebration will take place in the Mary Garden outside the church. After prayer, there will be cake and ice cream. Sunday, September 16 is Catechetical Sunday. Please join us for the 9:30 A.M. Mass and extend your prayers to our faculty. The greatest sign of appreciation that you can show our faculty is your attendance. God bless!

Mrs. Farrell Director of Religious Education

Welcome back to a new school year. We are excited about all our upcoming activities and events. On Saturday, September 8, the parish is going to celebrate Our Blessed Mother’s birthday. We will have songs and prayers in the Church yard at 7:30PM. Afterwards, we will have cake and ice cream. When you come, please take a picture with the statue of Mary and we will hang it in school. Bring a beach chair so you will be comfortable. Catechetical Sunday is September 16th. At the 9:30 Mass we will show our appreciation to our teachers and catechists for sharing their faith with our young people. Please come and show them how much we appreciate all that they do.

Mrs. Miller, Ms. Martino, Mrs. Natale, Mrs. Luciano, Ms. Papaioannou UPK

Throughout each day, children are actively engaged in "purposeful play" activities that reflect the NYS Early Childhood Guidelines. Our UPK program focuses on each child's development in: language and literacy, early math, science, nutrition, self-awareness and self-confidence. We believe in an active hands on involvement approach to learning. We encourage and provide opportunities for each UPK family to be involved in their child's education. We make learning fun!

Mrs. DiTalia Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten! I am Mrs. Di Talia and I am so excited for this school year! This year will be filled with so many magical moments. Your children will learn that letters transform into sounds that turn into words that will make sentences. We will also be exploring numbers and that they are used for more than just counting. We will investigate science concepts and learn about the importance of our community through social studies. With the help of Father Carlos, we will also be practicing and learning prayers about our Catholic faith to help prepare our kindergarteners to join our school during our monthly masses. I am looking forward to a fantastic year!

Ms. Fontanes First Grade

Welcome to the Second Grade and a new and exciting school year. We pray that we will all have a wonderful experience. The following objectives are important components of the second grade curriculum. In the area of Religion, the focus is on participation at Mass, the 10 commandments and the reception of the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist.  ELA encompasses  many different skills, such as: comprehension, decoding, creating short stories, organizing and revising writing, spelling, vocabulary, use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, suffixes, prefixes, and contractions.  Important concepts in the subject of Math are addition and subtraction facts to 18, regrouping in addition and subtraction with tens and hundreds, word problems, measurement, time, and money. Science will include experiments.  Group work and projects are included in the Science and Social Studies curriculum. We have a lot to accomplish this year and we have much to look forward to!

Ms. Rodgers Third Grade

Welcome to third grade!  We’re off to a great start. We are excited to welcome 2 new members to the SMGHCA Family, Dylan and Nino!  If you haven’t sent in your child’s school supplies, please do so on Monday. I look forward to meeting all the parents at Back to School Night next week. In the meantime, please download the ClassDojo app - this is a communication tool we will be using to keep school families connected to our classroom. Instructions on how we will use this app and how you can connect to our class will be given during Back to School Night. This year our 3rd graders will spend time in ELA on several topics including reading with fluency and expression, writing, and editing; we will also work on our speaking and listening skills.  Math will focus, not only on fluency of basic math facts of multiplication and division, but also geometry and problem solving.  We will be learning about communities and our environment in Science and Social Studies.  The study of the Catholic Faith is an important aspect of our mission at SMGHCA and is a key element of our 3rd grade schedule, which will include tours of the church, learning to pray the Rosary, studying the life of St. Louis de Montfort, and learning more about the Mass and the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confession.  We have much to look forward to for the 2018-2019 school year!

Ms. Mena Art & Spanish

¡Bienvenidos! My name is Oladis Mena and I'll be your child's Art & Spanish Teacher this school year. We’re going to have a lot of fun! In art we will use various materials to promote creativity. I encourage all my students to express themselves artistically and know we’ll enjoy our time together. For Spanish class, I hope they have their passports ready because they will be learning all the amazing things the Spanish language has to offer. They will be given an opportunity to open their minds to different cultures and learn the differences from country to country. Learning a second language is very beneficial for a child, not only will they be able to communicate with others, but they will be acquiring skills that will help them in High School, College, and in their Careers. With my help they will learn about Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. I look forward to a wonderful school year and hope your child is ready to travel. ¡Gracias!
